@ck: You not only need a car but a snowblower, too. I grew up in Michigan and know the deal.

@rick.merritt: You should visit us in NW MN in February and tell me that a car is seen as a luxury. Great article BTW. Thanks!

@Christine: In addition to the confined geography is the island, Taiwanese live more frugally that their counterparts in the US where everyone feels they must have a car. A car is seen as a luxury.

The reason you see much scooter on the road is because in Taiwan it has more than twenty million population in this small country. And it's quite time-consuming to drive the car and looking for parking lot for short distance trip within a city. Scooter here is much for transportation while motorcycle is for personal hobby. And the license also different for both.

Taiwan and Singapore are two glowing examples of resourceful islands in APAC. Great places to visit and do business with.

Taiwan should be reckoned as a COUNTRY, instead of an island. If you dont know where you are visiting, then the whole point of this essay writing is down the drain...

Thanks for this piece Rick. I haven't been to Taiwan in over a decade, but this photojournal & story presented a great overview of some of the exciting things going on there.
