In a move to accelerate its high-end, LAN/WAN-components efforts, Agilent Technologies Inc. has acquired a key research laboratory from Telecom Italia.
Under the terms of the deal, Agilent, the test, measurement, and components spin-off of Hewlett-Packard Co., will acquire Telecom Italia's Optical Technology Center (OTC).
Agilent, Palo Alto, Calif., will also acquire OTC's facilities in Turin, Italy, including advanced laboratory equipment and the research center's patent portfolio.
The move will accelerate Agilent's delivery of chips and components for 10-Gbit/s and dense-wavelength division-multiplex applications, according to Bill Sullivan, senior vice president and general manager of Agilent's Semiconductor Products Group.
OTC and its 50 employees will become part of Agilent's Fiber Optics Communications Division. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
