COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. will use a WiMax baseband/RF chip set from Beceem Communications Inc. in multiple generations of user terminal products.
The decision may have seemed a foregone conclusion, given Samsung Ventures' role in 2005 as a lead investor in Beceem for a Series C round that also included Intel and Docomo. But Beceem vice president of business development Lars Johnsson said there was more work and deliberation involved in working with Samsung as an OEM.
"The design collaboration has a history going back to early WiBro demonstrations at an intergovernmental APAC meeting," Johnsson said. "We had to work with Samsung's telecommunications networks business unit to assure the chip set would meet all requirements of the emerging global WiMax standard."
While no time frame or dollar amount has been assigned to the design win, Johnsson said it involves multiple end-user terminals in multiple generations of product from Samsung. Thus it will be "significant for Beceem, in both revenue and in showing an ability to ramp to high volume," he said.
