SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Honda's humanoid robot is slated to conduct the Detroit Symphony Orchestra on May 13.
The so-called ASIMO robot will conduct the orchestra, which will perform the classic song "Impossible Dream." ASIMO stands for Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility.
"The robot is being used today to encourage and inspire young students to consider studies in math and science,'' according to Honda. ''The addition of music
education to ASIMO's repertoire is a natural extension of these efforts.''
Honda began developing a humanoid robot in 1986. ASIMO made its U.S. debut in 2002, when
it rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange.
The latest version of ASIMO, which includes the ability to run, debuted in North America at the Consumer Electronics Show in 2007.
