Calculating that the many next generation consumer electronics entertainment systems will still need lots of remote controls with 8-bit brains, Zilog Corp. has an offer embedded designers using its ZLP MCUs can't refuse.
The company has just made available free of charge a Remote Control Development software suite for its ZLP32300 OTP-based infrared eight bit microcontrollers.
According to ZiLOG executive vice president of sales and marketing, Ramesh Ramchandani, the Crimzon RC Express Remote Development Environment offers access to the company's 500,000+ IR Code Database and is designed to be used with the company's Crimzon Emulator kit.
Together, he said, they constitute a complete software environment for developing UIR control units for numerous brands and models of devices including TV sets, VCR and DVD players and recorders, satellite, cable and set top boxes, and audio units.
Using these tools, said Ramchandani, it is possible to configure a variety of remotes with features such as programming for a particular brand to locking a remote key to a particular device by setting the parameters in the RC Express.
"For example, the user can configure the duration of the blinking of the remote's indicator Light Emitting Diode (LED) as well as the duration that an IR signal is sent while a key remains pressed," he said. "The remote's database is
scalable for a number of devices, each of which can be added or removed from the database."
The Crimzon RC Express software package provides source code for a remote control application based on the API together with a standard remote control database library for a 6-in-1 device.
The source code application can be used as is, or can be modified if necessary by the customer with their own specific code. The source code, when linked with an accompanying object file and compiled, provides a fully-functional remote control that can then be burned onto ZLP32300 devices via the emulator. The programmed chip can then be tested immediately on the company's Crimzon Development Platform Board.
To download the ZLS32300100RXS Crimzon RC Express Remote Control Software Suite free of charge, embedded system developers need to go on line at Zilog's web site to register and qualify.
