Albany, N.Y., December 2, 2004 - MTI MicroFuel Cells (MTI Micro), the developer of award winning MobionTM cord-free rechargeable portable power technology suitable for handheld electronic devices and a subsidiary of Mechanical Technology Incorporated (NASDAQ:MKTY), announced today that it has received required safety certifications from Underwriter's Laboratories Inc. (UL) and CSA International (CSA) for its first product.
The micro fuel cell product that has received certification, MTI Micro's Mobion power packs for military and industrial markets, is targeted for shipment by the end of 2004 for use in logistics and warehousing applications (such as RFID tag readers) where shorter run-time and re-charge maintenance of traditional batteries can reduce worker productivity. The Mobion power packs were manufactured by MTI Micro's manufacturing partner Flextronics, in San Jose, California.
MTI Micro has worked closely with Underwriters Laboratories and led the effort for UL's first-ever test requirements documentation for a micro fuel cell product. UL is an independent, not-for-profit product-safety testing and certification organization and has tested products for public safety for more than a century. Since its founding in 1894, UL has earned the reputation as a leader in product-safety testing and certification in North America and throughout the world.
"Underwriters Laboratories is pleased to provide its testing and certification expertise to MTI Micro within this exciting growth industry," said Bill Colavecchio, business manager of UL's Alternative Energy unit. "It has been a pleasure working with the team at MTI Micro, and to be able to issue the UL Mark to their Mobion power pack. We look forward to additional testing and certification for their future products in the coming months and years."
Additionally, MTI Micro has been granted CSA's Certificate of Compliance for its Mobion power pack. CSA is a leading provider of product testing and certification services for compliance to national and international standards, and issues certification marks for qualified products. Certification marks tell potential customers and users that a product has been evaluated by a formal process-involving examination, testing and follow-up inspection, and that it complies with applicable standards for safety and performance. MTI Micro's CSA Certification applies to both U.S. and Canadian markets.
"Our testing process and certification marks at CSA are recognized around the world for a variety of products, including electrical, mechanical, plumbing and gas," said Todd Strothers, Regional Manager at CSA's Charlotte, NC office. "We are delighted to apply our expertise by working with MTI Micro, and granting them the CSA Mark for their break-through Mobion power pack for this emerging product category."
"From the outset of our company's formation, building and delivering products that meet or exceed customer expectations for performance and safety has been our goal," said William Acker, President and CEO of MTI Micro. "Certification from UL and CSA for our initial Mobion power packs is a significant and necessary step on our path as a world leader in delivering safe, highly functional power sources for military, industrial and future portable consumer electronics."
