The GridWise Alliance has just announced the formation of the Smart Grid Consumer Coalition, a group formed to educate consumers on the importance of implementing the smart grid and what its implementation means for them.
Katherine Hamilton, President of the GridWise Alliance spoke of the announcement: "Today, the Smart Grid Consumer Coalition announced its inception as a group focused on benefits of smart grid to consumers. The need for such an effort was identified by Control4, a company that focuses on affordable IP-based home control systems; they could not find the research and best practices that exist in many other industries. Seeing the need for a deeper dialog with consumers, they asked Jesse Berst, whom as we know has a well-documented understanding of smart grid with the Smart Grid Newsletter, to pull together leading companies and associations to join together to fill this gap. The GridWise Alliance is a founding member and is committed to supporting and collaborating with the SGCC as it performs research and then educates and empowers consumers to engage in smart grid.
"We have always said that the grid is not really smart unless the consumers are able to be active participants and make decisions on how they use energy. As we move forward with our own industry-based consumer efforts, we will work closely with Jesse and the SGCC to share information and ideas and to leverage resources so that consumers will not only participate in but also benefit from a smarter grid."
The group hopes to gain awareness amongst the public immediately to spread its message about the benefits of smart grid implementation and why it needs to have people on board with the concept.
