I have been developing automotive software for a over a decade now (ranging from testing, developing, team lead, developing). I have to say that touch screens tech for automotive is very dangerous while driver is driving, you do not need to look to change the volume using a knob, but if touch screen volume change you will need to take your eyes off the road. Though touch screens are the flavor of the month and i can see why it is integrated into cars. I have to say that when recently rented the Prius, I was very disappointed with their center counsel using touch screens for Radio, Climate control, nav. i found myself merging into other lanes as I wanted to change the channel or temp.. very very dangerous. though this is my opinion.

Cap touch seems to be a good way to go when you have a series of command icons instead of text and keypad based entry. You can always create text/keypads 'virtually' when needed and the soda spill just wipes off too!
