I totally agree. 8bit controllers are very cost effective and at the same time you can do a lots with them in design.

But, with 16 bit microcontrollers available at the same price points, how does being an '8-bit' remain a differentiator?

This article mentions using PWM for dimming of LEDs and some readers may think that they could use the same technique to do colour control. But there has been a long standing issue with Colour Kinetics (now part of Philips) having patents on such applications, despite PWM being used for years prior to the patent. @silicon_smith Price point may not be the only issue. Power consumption might be a design requirement, placing the 8-bit over the 16-bit.

I disagree. the MSP430 (16 bit) beats most if not all 8 bit competitors with regards to power consumption. Power is not a reason to disregard the MSP430 even though it is 16 bit.
