SAN FRANCISCO—Claiming an advance in the developing market for wireless charging technology, Texas Instruments Inc. Wednesday (Nov. 7) rolled out a pair of chips intended to provide smartphone users with a simpler charging experience and help designers implement wireless power technology in more places.
TI (Dallas) introduced its first single-chip wireless power receiver with an integrated battery charger, bq51050B, as well as a "free-position" transmitter IC said to expand the charge area by 400 percent, bq500410A. Both devices are compatible with the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC)'s Qi standard.
TI said the bq500410A is the first WPC 1.1-ready wireless power transfer controller to support A6 transmitters. The controller allows a Qi-compliant smartphone or other portable device to charge in a surface area of at least 70 mm by 20 mm, 400-percent larger compared to today's 18-mm by 18-mm "bull's-eye" charge space.

According to Pavan Pudipeddi, business development manager for TI's wireless power products, the bq500410A features three transmit coil arrays—as opposed to one in typical transmitter ICs—to enable a larger charging space and easier use. The three coils will enable users to set their phone anywhere on the mat and still get a consistent experience, he said.
"When you put your phone on the mat, no matter what the orientation, you will get an immediate response and charging experience," Pudipeddi said.
TI said the bq500410A achieves greater than 70-percent efficiency. The device utilizes a parasitic metal and foreign object detection feature to protect the system and stop delivering power if a metal object is detected between the transmitter and receiver.
