LONDON – Infineon Technologies AG has launched the XMC1000 family of industrial and low-end consumer microcontrollers claiming they provide 32-bit performance at 8-bit prices.
Infineon (Munich, Germany) said it is manufacturing the chips on 300-mm diameter wafers using a 65-nm CMOS manufacturing process with embedded flash memory and that samples will be available in March 2013.
The XMC1000 microcontrollers are based on the Cortex-M0 processor core licensed from ARM Holdings plc (Cambridge, England). The are complementary to the XMC4000 series industrial microcontrollers launched in January 2012, which are based on the Cortex-M4 processor core.
A set of peripherals allows the MCUs to address typical 8-bit applications including sensor and actuator applications, LED lighting, digital power conversion, uninterruptible power supplies and simple motor drives, such as those used in household appliances, pumps, fans and e-bikes, Infineon said.
Infineon is launching the XMC1000 family in three series; the entry-level XMC1100, the XMC1200 (feature series) and the XMC1300 (control series). The three series differ in terms of their memory capacity and peripheral set. On-chip flash memory capacity ranges between 8-kbytes and 200-kbytes. In all the XMC1000 family currently comprises 23 products in TSSOP packages with 16, 28 and 38 pins.
The XMC1000 offers scalability down from the XMC4000 microcontroller family and can be programmed with the free DAVE development environment, said Stephan Zizala, senior director of industrial and multimarket microcontrollers at Infineon, in statement.
Volume production is planned for 4Q13. Depending on the particular XMC1000 series and peripheral set, prices for order quantities of several million units can range between 0.25 euro (about $0.33) and 1.25 euro (about $1.67).
