The REMC technique is symmetrical and could be applied in both the
basestation receiver and the handset receiver but for now Moortec is
only targeting handsets. The REMC IP can either be supplied as software
for implementation on existing hardware, or for a more efficient
implementation, be synthesized down to an IP core for inclusion in a
mobile device SoC, Crosher said.
"Basically, the systems in this
area are not as efficient as they could be. All the big companies are
working on their DSP chains but this is more of step change," said
Crosher gave a five-minute pitch of the REMC technology
at a one-day entrepreneurial conference organized in London by the
Global Semiconductor Alliance. In the presentation Crosher said that
Moortec is looking for a first customer and partner as well as funding
to develop the technology.
The REMC technology is somewhat
different to Moortec's origins in 2005, founded by a mixed-signal design
team. Having started off in design services the company has added
licensing of circuits to its business. The company has enjoyed
particular success with process, voltage-and temperature-detection
circuits which are used by leading-edge processor companies for
speed-grade sorting and for monitoring temperature as part of dynamic
voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS).
temperature sensor IP range is available as supporting IP for
Globalfoundries 28-nm CMOS manufacturing process and standard 65-, 40-,
and 28-nm CMOS processes from TSMC. It is applied to ASIC performance
optimization, thermal management, device reliability, temperature
sensing during device qualification (or burn-in) and device security.
