Great article that reflects the changes in the industry towards WSNs and new applications - the part that is missing in my opinion is the Energy Harvesting part! New low power designs have open a wide door to EH solutions (wasn't realistic couple of years ago due to power budget)..these solutions, are been adopted by leading WS companies to resolve the battery limitations.. As for today, you can find multiple applications running on Solar, Vibration and Thermal harvesters connected to a supercap or rechargeable battery..
