LONDON – Spreadtrum Communications Inc. (Shanghai, China) has a developed single-chip mobile handset application processors for TDSCDMA (SC8825) and EDGE (SC6825) cellular phone standards.
Both processors integrate a dual-core 1.2-GHz Cortex-A5 core processor, a dual-core Mali 400 graphics processor and multimedia and hardware accelerators. Both chips are paired with a single-chip multimode RF transceiver and are pin-to-pin compatible, enabling handset makers to work on a single smartphone design intended to ship to China as well as to emerging markets.
The SC8825 and SC6825 are commercially available and have been designed into smartphone models that are expected to ship commercially during 2Q13.
Spreadtrum's SC8825 supports dual-mode TD-SCDMA/HSPA & EDGE/GPRS/GSM and the SC6825 supports EDGE/GPRS/GSM. The chips also support 1280 by 720 pixel LCD display, H.264 720p video playback, up to 8 megapixel RGB camera and dual-SIM, dual-standby capability. The chipsets ship with Android and systems software, thereby reducing the amount of work handset makers need to do to bring devices to market, with reference implementations available for both 4-layer and 6-layer PCB layouts.
