LONDON – NXP Semiconductors NV (Eindhoven, The Netherlands) and Cohda Wireless Pty Ltd. (Adelaide, South Australia) have announced that they have joined the CAR2CAR Communication Consortium, which was formed in October 2012 by 12 vehicle makers.
CAR 2 CAR members include Audi, BMW, Daimler, Honda, Man, Opel, PSA-Peugot-Citroen, Renault, Volkswagen and Volvo. The group is focused on deploying wireless communication between cars, or between cars and traffic infrastructure, in Europe.
In addition, NXP and Cohda have announced the introduction of "RoadLink" as their brand for marketing Car-to-X (C2X) communication and security for on-board and road-side units.
RoadLink units based on Cohda wireless communications technology and NXP silicon are being developed by Lesswire AG (Berlin, Germany). The first C2X module from Lesswire is intended to support introduction in vehicles from 2015 onwards in line with the timetable planned by the CAR2CAR consortium.
The use of the autonomous exchange of information between cars and other cars, and between cars and infrastructure, will be able to address about 80 percent of the causes of road-traffic accidents, according to Cohda research.
Cohda's technology enhances wireless communications in terms of latencies and guaranteed reception beyond off-the-shelf receivers and transmitters using the IEEE 802.11 communication standard. NXP contributes the hardware implementing software-defined radio, mixed-signal RF tuners and security technologies.
"The fact that NXP, as a major driver of secure connected mobility solutions, has designed first automotive-ready products for C2X is a major step in the consortium's plans of making car-to-car communication on European roads a reality from 2015 onwards," said Soren Hess, general manager of the CAR2CAR Communication Consortium, in a statement issued by NXP.
