LONDON – Altera Corp. (San Jose, Calif.) and Applied Micro Circuits Corp. (Sunnyvale, Calif.) have announced that they will undertake joint development and marketing of products intended for use in data centers. At the same time the companies announced the sale of Tpack A/S (Copenhagen, Denmark) from AMCC to Altera for an undisclosed amount.
The cooperation will enable the two companies to combine Altera FPGAs with processors from AMCC, including its 64-bit X-Gene processor aimed at server applications. The cooperation is intended to span from hardware to software and provide the basis for fast-turn designs in application areas including data centers, networking and storage.
The collaboration will include shared efforts on product definition, co-development of reference designs and supporting software development. The resulting designs will combine the robust silicon and software from AppliedMicro with the performance and flexibility advantages of Altera's FPGAs, the companies said.
"Combining Altera's advanced FPGA technology with our X-Gene Server on a Chip, Gearbox, PQX and QPSK products will provide our customers with highly optimized, cost-effective designs for next-generation data center infrastructure," said George Jones, vice president of connectivity products at AMCC, in a statement.
AMCC also announced it has signed a definitive agreement to sell
Tpack A/S, a wholly-owned subsidiary based in Copenhagen Denmark, to Altera. Tpack delivers complete FPGA-based optical transport network
products targeting packet and optical networking equipment suppliers. The transaction is expected to close later this month, subject to standard
closing conditions and other terms set forth in the agreement. AppliedMicro
will retain license rights to Tpack technology following the divestiture.
AMCC bought Tpack for $32 million
in cash plus revenue-contigent earn outs in August 2010. Tpack was founded in 2001.
