LONDON – Globalfoundries has joined a collaborative research program run by European research institute IMEC on STT-MRAM (spin-transfer torque magnetoresistive random access memory) technology.
Globalfoundries Inc. (Milpitas, Calif.) is joining Qualcomm and several semiconductor manufacturing equipment suppliers in the project. If the research is successful it could put Globalfoundries in a leading position to supply Qualcomm with logic chips with embedded MRAM or separate but closely packaged logic and MRAM die.
IMEC (Leuven, Belgium) and the program members aim to explore the potential of STT-MRAM, including read performance below 1-ns and scalability to below 10-nm minimum dimensions for embedded and standalone applications, IMEC said.
"Innovation in next-generation memory is required to give chip designers new options to continue to deliver leading-edge products with higher performance, lower power-consumption, and better bandwidth," said Gregg Bartlett, chief technology officer of Globalfoundries, in a statement.
