SAN JOSE, Calif. Pericom Semiconductor Corp has launched families of 5-V PCI hot-plugging and GTL-termination bus-switch ICs for multiprocessor environments, such as the Web.
The PI5C6801C, PI5C16215C and PI5C32160C PCI hot-plug bus switches minimize live insertion noise by providing pre-charged output. In addition, the switches have a patented undershoot-protection circuitry that ensures the switch is not falsely enabled during isolation, thus preventing any false data on the bus.
The PI5C32200 bus-switch family obviates the need for terminator cards and their subsequent reliability and overhead issues. The bus switches also enable transparent insertion and removal of CPU cards in a multiprocessor server environment and provide an overall system cost saving to the customer, said Pericom.
"The PCI bus is becoming the predominant I/O bus for mission-critical applications such as servers, and in those applications, it is important to keep the bus functioning during any peripheral insertion or removal. They all need termination for the empty slots and the only solution offered to-day is the termination card," said Kay Annamalai, Pericom product-marketing manager.
The main application for Pericom's new bus switches is PC servers that use the Intel Pentium II or Pentium III processor in a multiprocessor environment. Additional applications include embedded computers using Pentium II or Pentium III processors for telecom and other industrial applications, for example.
PI5C6801C is a 10-bit bus switch, PI5C16215C a 20-bit bus switch and PI5C32160C a 16:32 demux/mux bus switch.
The PI5C32200 GTL termination bus-switch family with 56-ohms internal termination pull-up is designed for a two- to three-processor system using Slot 1 processor cards. The PI5C32201, with 75-ohms internal termination pull-up resistor, is designed for a three- to four-processor system using Slot 1 cards; the PI5C32202, with 100-ohms internal termination pull-up resistor, is applicable for a four- to five-processor system using Slot 2 processor cards.
The PCI hot-plug and GTL termination bus switches are now in production. PI5C6801C is packaged in 24-pin TSSOP or QSOP. PI5C16215C is packaged in 48-pin TSSOP. PI5C32160C is packaged in 56-pin TSSOP. Pricing for the PI5C6801C, PI5C16215C and PI5C32160C is $1.29, $2.29 and $2.89, respectively, for lots of 10,000.
The PI5C32200, PI5C32201, PI5C32202 and PI5C32203 GTL termination bus switches come in 56-pin TSSOP package. The price is $1.98 in similar quantities.
