DES PLAINES, Ill. Designers concerned about protecting their circuits from electrostatic discharge will find help in Littelfuse Inc.'s new line of ESD suppressors. The PulseGuard ESD line suppressors have extremely low capacitance and low leakage current, suiting them for the protection of sensitive data, signal and control lines, said Littelfuse marketing engineer Jim Colby.
The line extends the polymer technology Littelfuse originated with its polymer PTC overcurrent-protection devices. "The configurability of the polymer allows us to provide customers with a much wider selection of form factors to meet their package requirements," said Colby. The ESD suppressors include surface-mountable, discrete (single-line) packages and multiline arrays, plus connector-based packages.
Colby noted that the company has also been working to improve performance by lowering the trigger and clamping voltages.
As integrated circuitry becomes smaller, faster and lower in voltage, it also becomes more sensitive to the effects of ESD. Applications that require the protection of sensitive input/output lines include computers, peripherals, medical and test equipment, process controllers and telecom equipment. In general, any communication line that connects integrated circuitry to the outside world can make the equipment susceptible to ESD overvoltage events.
Regardless of the form factor chosen, Littelfuse's suppressors will help customers comply with the full IEC 1000-4-2 test standard through Level 4, which has test requirements of 8 kV (direct discharge) and 15 kV (air discharge), said Colby. The suppressors boast less than 1-pF capacitance, less than 0.1-microamp leakage current and a response time of less than 1 ns. The line also offers 50-V clamping voltage. Parts are suitable for applications with 24-Vdc (or less) operating voltage.
Initially, the product is available in the EIA SOCM-1608 (0.063 x 0.031-inch) package for a single line of protection. Future PulseGuards will come in Jedec-standard configurations for multiple lines of protection in SOT-23 and SO8 packages. The single-line suppressor sells for 12 cents each in large production quantities.
