UPPER SADDLE RIVER, N.J. Pentek Inc. has introduced a board that adds a pair of front-panel data-port (FPDP) interfaces to a VXI system. Compatible with Hewlett-Packard Co.'s VXI local bus, the C-size Model 4404 delivers high-speed, cross-platform communications between VXI and VMEbus for building real-time data-acquisition and processing systems, according to Pentek.
Using the Model 4404, "system designers can for the first time link HP local bus devices to VMEbus devices through a 160-Mbyte/second data path to take advantage of strategic products available in each format," said Rodger Hosking, Pentek's vice president. "These high-performance, hybrid systems offer extended capabilities for communications, automated testing and industrial-process control.
"Traditional VXI applications like these," he continued, "can now benefit from the wealth of VME offerings including real-time digital signal processing, digital receivers and high-speed data acquisition and analysis."
The FPDP ports on the board are individually configurable for operation in either input or output mode. In output mode, the board accepts data across a VXI backplane, packs that data into either 16- or 32-bit parallel words using a field-programmable gate array that also performs some simple high-speed processing tasks, then buffers the data in dual FIFO memories and delivers it into the front-panel FPDP connectors. An on-board FPDP controller provides interface logic, timing and handshaking, and supports both TTL and PECL data strobes for clock rates up to 40 MHz.
The board comes equipped with a set of virtual-instrument (VI) drivers for National Instruments' LabView with support for a variety of platforms running SunOS, Solaris, HP-UX, MS-DOS, Windows 95 and Windows NT. Pricing starts at $4,790 with delivery from 8 to 10 weeks.
