SUNNYVALE, CALIF. Silicon Storage Technology Inc. (SST) has introduced the 37 series of 3-V many-time programmable (MTP) SuperFlash electrically erasable programmable read-only memory as an alternative to one-time programmable (OTP) memory and ultraviolet EPROM.
It can take more than 30 minutes to reprogram an EPROM, vs. just a few seconds for an MTP device, the company said. In addition, an OTP device must be programmed correctly the first time or replaced, said marketing manager Kumar Prabhat.
In contrast, SST's MTP products can be rapidly reprogrammed and reused at least 1,000 times, resulting in an accelerated manufacturing cycle and lower manufacturing costs.
"Our MTP product family was designed to combine the electrical erasability of flash memory with the cost effectiveness of EPROM," Prabhat said. "This combination results in better manufacturing efficiency and lowers the overall cost of ownership. These advantages make our MTP flash products a timely replacement for EPROMs where in-system programming is not required."
The 37 series includes MTP devices in 4-Mbit (SST37VF040), 2-Mbit (SST37VF020), 1-Mbit (SST37VF010) and 512-kbit (SST37VF512) versions. The four devices are based on proprietary technology that uses a thick-oxide process for better data retention and higher reliability. Applications for MTP memories include DECT phones, video compact-disk players, printers, copiers, fax machines, digital toys, modems and other consumer and PC peripheral products.
The series is pin-compatible with SST's 39 series Multi-Purpose Flash products. In quantities of 10,000, the 512-kbit SST37VF512 is 90 cents, the 1-Mbit SST37VF010 is $1.05, the 2-Mbit SST37VF020 is $1.40 and the 4-Mbit SST37VF040 is $2.05.
