MENLO PARK, CALIF. Raychem's VTP240, the newest addition to its Polyswitch Battery Protection line of resettable fuses, has the highest hold current (2.4 amps) in the VTP series.
This design enables overcurrent and overtemperature protection for such high-current applications as handheld wireless products and PDAs. "The VTP240 is Raychem's solution for OEMs that require a resettable fuse for high-current drain applications," said marketing manager Frank Owen.
The PolySwitch battery protection device is a polymeric positive-temperature-coefficient resettable fuse that functions as a low-resistance series element between battery cells and pack circuits. When the terminals of a pack are shorted, causing an overcurrent condition, the resistance of the PolySwitch device rapidly increases, reducing the discharge of the battery to a safe and protected level. The devices also protect against excessive cell temperatures that can be caused by faulty or incompatible chargers.
The 16-V, 100-A devices are suitable for prismatic cells, where they can provide thermal as well as short-circuit protection. The unit is 5-mm wide, allowing it to be installed on 6-mm-wide prismatic battery cells. It will be available this quarter. Prices start at 28 cents, depending on order volume.
