MARLBORO, MASS. Data Translation has fielded Universal Serial Bus data acquisition modules for the Macintosh. The DT9800-Mac modules, measuring 1.4 x 4.5 x 6.5 inches and weighing 9 ounces, bring the plug-and-play capabilities of USB to data acquisition for the iMac, iBook or Power Mac G4
"Users don't have to power down to connect the module," said product-marketing manager Tim Ludy. "In minutes, they are capturing data temperature, pressure, sound level-whatever the need-without having to program; open up their Mac; or think about the board configuration, power requirements or connection schemes."
The modules, starting at $795, come in several flavors, all with 16 single-ended or eight differential analog channels, 16 digital I/O lines, two counter/timers, and input ranges of plus/minus 1.25, 2.5, 5 and 10 volts. Different models provide 12-bit resolution and 100-ksample/second sampling or 16 bits and 50 ksamples/s. The 12-bit modules also support a 0 to 1.25-V input range. Some models provide a pair of analog outputs at 12 or 16 bits.
The modules' 500-V isolation "provides low-noise measurements, prevents ground loops and protects the computer," Ludy said. They are supplied with setup software for verifying USB operation, displaying data or saving it to disk or an Excel spreadsheet. A developers' kit is also available.
