NEW HAVEN, CONN. Cyclone Microsystems Inc. is building on its success in I/O processor boards with a 64-bit Compact PCI (CPCI) for the single-board computer (SBC) market. In order to simplify the task of developing embedded application code and producing boot ROMs, the company is also providing task debug, development and function calls in the standard firmware set for the board.
The Model CPCI-947 is based on an i960RN processor and 64 Mbytes of SDRAM, expandable to 128 Mbytes. It's built around a primary and a secondary 64-bit, 66-MHz PCI local bus, with the processing subsystem residing on the primary. The secondary is dedicated to dual 10/100 Base T Ethernet links and a PCI Mezzanine card (PMC) expansion site. Devices on the two buses communicate when necessary over the board's PCI-to-PCI bridge.
The board has an SDRAM controller that delivers a 528-Mbyte/second peak transfer rate, said company vice president Peter Zackin, so it is "capable of data transfers twice as fast as either PCI bus." Moreover, it lets a PMC device DMA data into local memory or through the bridge to the host memory, continued Zackin. "Using fast DMA transfers and multimaster processing, the PCI interface/bridge uses autoconfiguration for easy product integration," he said.
Operating as a host processor board, the module provides the interrupt, arbitration, clocking and reset functions for other boards in a CompactPCI system, and it supplies PCI configuration resources such as mailbox registers and doorbell registers. Providing peak CompactPCI transfer rates up to 264 Mbytes/s, it supports hot-swap.
The module starts shipping July 15, with prices starting at $1,627 in quantities of 1,000. Board support packages for VxWorks and IxWorks are available, as is a development environment called Breeze, which Zackin said "accelerates the time to develop an embedded system by taking the risk out of building boot ROMs, providing an automatic boot user application feature and reducing the amount of hardware-level programming involved with the system service calls."
