NEWPORT BEACH, CALIF. Conexant Systems Inc. is packaging two new chips-a broadband access multiplexer and a High-level Data Link Controller (HDLC)-with other devices in chip sets for Internet Protocol (IP) routers.
The CX29503 broadband access multiplexer and the CX28500 MUSYCC-1024 HDLC, a 1,024-channel multichannel synchronous communications controller, join the recently introduced CX29600 OptiPHY-M622 and CX29610 OptiPHY-M155 framer/multiplexer devices for synchronous optical network and synchronous digital hierarchy (Sonet/ SDH) equipment.
The chip set is aimed at applications where OC-12 (622-Mbit/second) or synchronous transfer module (STM)-4 traffic must be channelized down to DS1/E1 for IP traffic configuration of four broadband access multiplexer (BAM) devices, two HDLC devices and an OptiPHY-M622 Sonet/SDH framer/multiplexer. Conexant's chip set for OC-3 (155-Mbit/s) or STM-1 applications includes an OptiPHY- M155, a BAM and an HDLC.
Marek Tlalka, the Sonet/SDH product line manager for Conexant's Network Access Division, said the OC-12/STM-4 chip set consolidates all IP traffic mapping, multiplexing, demultiplexing and framing functions, which reduces chip count from 17 to seven. The chip set cuts board space requirements in half, Tlalka said, while reducing per-port framer costs by up to 20 percent and shortening time-to-market.
The CX29503 BAM Sonet/ SDH-to-PDH mapper performs mapping, multiplexing, demultiplexing and framing of three STS-1, AU-3, DS3 or E3 inputs, or one AU-4 input, into any valid combination of 84 DS1 or 63 E1 circuits. It generates and terminates all virtual tributary and virtual container path overhead and supports Sonet/SDH-to-PDH mapping at rates of 51, 2 and 1.5 Mbits/s.
The BAM includes three embedded DS3/E3 framers, three M13/E13 mux/demux blocks with G.747 support, 84 embedded DS1 framers and 63 embedded E1 framers. Other features include standards-compliant alarm indicators, status monitoring and error counters for all supported tributaries, and an embedded programmable state machine that offloads network maintenance activities from the host processor.
The CX28500 MUSYCC-1024 multichannel HDLC controller formats and deformats up to 1,024 HDLC data channels and supports 32 serial ports for 500-Mbit/s full-duplex data throughput.
The OptiPHY framing and multiplexing devices perform all required Sonet/SDH processing, overhead termination and multiplexer/demultiplexer functions.
The CX29503 BAM is packaged in a 31 x 31-mm SBGA and priced at $790 in quantities of 10,000. The CX28500 controller, in a 35 x 35-mm ball grid array, is $275.
The CX29600 and CX29610 framer/multiplexers are packaged in 416-pin, 27 x 27-mm SBGAs and priced at $70 and $225, respectively. Samples should be available in the third quarter and production quantities in the fourth quarter.
