SUNNYVALE, CALIF. AND Optoelectronics has introduced a range of LEDs using gallium nitrogen (GaN) technology.
One family of surface-mount LEDs with both flat and domed lenses is designed for ultrabright light emission. The AND4 flat-lens series consists of two different colors of miniature LEDs that measure 2 mm long x 1.25 mm wide x 1.1 mm high. The parts in the AND5 domed series are ultrabright blue in color and slightly larger, at 3.2 mm long x 2.4 mm wide x 2.6 mm high. Both the AND4 and AND5 series LEDs have a luminous intensity range of 18 millicandela to 192 mcd.
The flat and domed family of LEDS is available in blue and white. It includes the AND4BA (blue), the AND4WA (white) and the AND5BA (blue). They require about 10 milliamps of forward current. The devices are designed to withstand surface-mount pc-board soldering temperatures and can be either hand-soldered, dip-soldered or reflow-soldered.
The domed-lens AND5 series has five times greater light intensity than the flat-lens AND4 series, but the flat lens is suited for wide-area illumination.
The parts are aimed at applications in portable instruments, high-intensity backlighting of keypads and LCD panels, or any application where a high-intensity array of light is required. The low power requirements make the devices suitable for handheld or battery-powered equipment. Because of the surface-mount packaging and miniature size, the modules are suitable for applications where low manufacturing and installation costs are required for high-density light arrays.
Pricing for the series is 86 cents each in production quantities. Delivery is from stock.
Another family using GaN technology consists of blue, white and green ultrabright LEDs. The AND520 series is offered in the 5-mm (T1-3/4) package. The LEDs have a luminous intensity ranging from 1,400 mcd to 5,000 mcd, making them suitable for outdoor message sign boards and indicator lights.
The devices tout fast response times that are capable of pulse operation. They require a low drive current of about 1 to 20 milliamps dc and are said to exhibit a strong on-off contrast ratio.
The AND520 series includes the AND520HB (blue), the AND520HG (green) and the AND520HW (white). They are targeted for applications where the addition of the new colors of blue, supergreen and white will enhance or offer greater versatility in the design of display systems.
The line is suitable for indoor and outdoor message signs and any low-power-consuming applications. For example, they can be used in applications where the additional colors will provide greater information in computers, peripherals, instrumentation, automotive apparatus, and aircraft and airport lighting.
Pricing for the AND520 series is $1.44 each in production quantities. Delivery is from stock.
