SHELTON, CONN. PowerSmart says its PS334 programmable SMBus smart battery IC for lithium-ion battery packs brings high-level accuracy not only to capacity monitoring but also to charge control and safety.
The PS334, the most advanced of the company's P3 family of self-learning 3-D cell models, features core algorithms for all Li-based chemistries (preprogrammed external E2PROM optional) and six programmable outputs that eliminate the need for the additional components required for charge control or safety.
The programmable outputs can be used as LED outputs for state of charge and direct charge control or to provide additional levels of safety in Li-ion packs. Up to five LEDs can be programmed to display the state of charge, leaving one output available for safety or charge control. Moreover, any output can be programmed to support safety requirements such as disabling charge or discharge, or to blow a fuse and disable the pack.
Charge control and safety features are implemented using real-time information, RISC and 14-bit sigma-delta A/D. Capabilities include current measurement accuracy to within 1 percent, voltage accuracy to within plus/minus 50 millivolts and temperature accuracy to within 1 degrees C.
