CHICAGO Stratos Lightwave LLC has introduced a family of optical transceiver modules for ATM OC-48 applications in metropolitan and wide-area networking. Capable of running at data rates up to 2.488 Gbits/second, these transceivers fit the industry-standard small form factor of 0.386 x 0.515 x 1.901 inches.
They are compatible with the industry-standard LC fiber-optic interface, with "double the port density of conventional SC optical transceivers," a company spokesman said.
According to the spokesman, the transceivers provide "high-performance integrated duplex data links for bidirectional communication over multimode or single-mode optical fiber." They are available in four versions: one for 850-nanometer multimode applications and three for 1,300-nm single-mode applications.
The 850-nm version uses a low-cost vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) "to deliver cost-effective performance," the spokesman said, while the 1300-nm versions "provide high-reliability communication over single-mode optical fiber which meets or exceeds existing ATM OC-48 requirements."
The three 1,300-nm versions are rated at maximum transmission distances of 2, 10 and 20 kilometers.
The transceivers feature TTL signal-detect output and transmitter-disable input. Their low-profile enclosures fit mezzanine-card systems, and they are wave solderable and aqueous washable.
Operation is from a single 3.3-volt power supply. Stratos Lightwave said the transceivers also meet all applicable safety certifications, including Class 1 Laser Safety Compliance, UL 1950 and IEC-825-1. They also comply with FDA Radiation Performance Standards, 21 CFR Subchapter J, the company said.
Pricing for the SFF ATM OC-48 optical transceivers depends on specific model, options specified and quantity ordered. Typical pricing is less than $500 each in production quantities.
