Sunnyvale, Calif. OmniVision Technologies Inc., which specializes in single-chip image sensors, has introduced a single-chip camera to Universal Serial Bus (USB) bridge for PC applications.
The OV518+ is designed to work with OmniVision's OV6620 (CIF) and OV7620 (VGA) color digital sensor chips, which offer resolution of up to 800 x 600 pixels. The device also includes an audio interface. The sensor and bridge chips together are said to provide a USB PC camera that doesn't require external DRAM.
The 3.3-volt I/O (2.5-V core), USB 1.1-compliant OV518+ is said to include a USB transceiver and eight isochronous interface alternates with a USB transfer rate of up to 7 Mbits/second. The audio device class 1.0-compliant audio interface samples at 8 kHz.
The OV518+ has a proprietary real-time compression engine, a programmable switching power clock, a serial camera control bus, general-purpose I/O pins and a built-in phase-locked loop. Apple Imac and Windows 98/2000 and ME drivers are available from OmniVision, as are reference designs and a pc-board layout. The OV518+ is packaged in a 100-pin quad flat pack and is priced at $7.
