AUSTIN, TEXAS - Cirrus Logic has introduced the Crystal CS4205 AC'97 codec, the company's first such device especially designed for notebook computers and docking stations. The codec includes a Zoom Video port for all-digital signals from MPEG decoders and the like. Other features include a digital mixer, digital treble and bass tone controls, and I2S I/O.
The chip incorporates patented algorithms from SRS Labs that are said to provide a 3-D "soundscape" from only two speakers. Its "digital-centric" docking interface is billed as reducing implementation costs in addition to improving audio quality. The Crystal CS4205 chip will be available in the first quarter, priced at $3.95 in quantities of 10,000 or more.
