Milpitas, Calif. - Linear Technology Corp.'s LTC3404 step-down dc/dc converter chip for portable and wireless applications utilizes a synchronous, 1.4-MHz topology to deliver up to 600 milliamps at an efficiency of up to 95 percent, which is said to be one of the highest among monolithic solutions.
Features include output voltage accuracy of plus/minus 2 percent, burst-mode/pulse-skipping operation to maintain high efficiency for small loads, and current-mode control to maximize line and load transient response.
The converter chip allows operation with a single lithium-ion battery or multiple NiCd/NiMH batteries (2.65- to 6-volt input range). Its 100 percent duty-cycle capability provides low dropout operation, extending battery run-time. The chip includes a 0.8-V reference, thus allowing the designer to program low output voltages.
The part, available from stock in an 8-lead miniature small-outline package, is priced at $2.70 each in quantities of 1,000.
