SALINE, MICH. - A line of IndustryPack serial-communication modules from Xycom Automation offers versions for either RS-232 or RS-422/485 serial communications. Both models boast programmable baud rates, unique interrupt vectors and handshake lines (RTS, CTS) for each channel. The boards feature line-break and false-start bit detection for more reliable serial communications, Xycom said. The built-in handshake lines on each channel simplify the use of modems, according to the company.
The XIP-4520 offers eight channels of RS-232 serial communications with 64 bytes of transmit FIFO buffers and 64 bytes of receive FIFO buffers. The XIP-4520 can be programmed for a baud rate of up to 230 kbits/second. Up to 32 serial communication channels can be obtained from a single card-cage slot when used with a carrier that holds four IndustryPack modules, allowing users to achieve high channel density while reducing costs and preserving card slots.
The XIP-4521 offers the same feature set but with eight channels of RS-422/485 serial communication. It uses socketed termination and bias resistors, and is capable of programmable baud rates up to 921.6 kbits/s.
Both boards use an industry-standard 16C544-family UART that includes a software-compatible 16C450 mode of operation. The Xycom XIP software support library ships with each module. The price is $345, with delivery in three to four weeks after receipt of order.
