WARRENVILLE, ILL. - Texas Instruments Inc. has expanded its Excalibur line of dc/dc converter modules with the launching of 1.5- and 3-amp units called the PT5520 and PT5500, respectively. The latest additions are said to provide designers with complete, easy-to-use power solutions for digital signal processors (DSPs), microprocessors, application-specific integrated circuits and field- programmable gate arrays (FPGAs).
Designed as a plug-in solution to reduce design time and speed time-to-market, the units seamlessly interface with TI's TMS320C5000 and TMS320C6000 DSP platforms and are said to be ideally suited for servers, workstations and networking applications. The PT5500 and PT5520 series modules are available with adjustable output voltages from 3.6 volts down to 1 V. They will operate from either a 3.3- or 5-V input bus, making them easy for designers to incorporate into existing power systems, TI said.
The modules use a synchronous buck topology to achieve efficiencies as high as 92 percent over an operating temperature range of -40 degrees C to 85 degrees C. The higher efficiencies equate to less heat and smaller packages. In this case, the Excalibur package is said to offer better thermal management and flexible mounting options that include surface-mount, vertical through-hole or horizontal through-hole configurations (0.9 x 0.95 x 0.31 inch). With a horizontal mounting profile of just 7.9 mm (0.31 inch), these units meet the critical 8-mm maximum height requirement for use with very narrow board pitches that are required in today's designs, TI said.
In addition, designers can leverage the vertical-mounting capabilities of the PT5500 and PT5520 for a smaller footprint that uses only 212 mm2 (0.33 inch2) of board space. That's 60 percent less than that taken up by TI's current plug-in solution, the PT6405, and half that when the PT5500/5520 are horizontally mounted.
In addition to being a cost-effective replacement for the PT6405 solution, the PT5500 and PT5520 have additional features including short-circuit protection, output inhibit (on/off), soft start and adjustable output voltage ( plus/minus 10 percent). At full load, the devices can operate at 85 degrees C with 200-LFM airflow.
Samples of the PT5500 and PT5520 are available now from TI and its authorized distributors. Volume production lead time is 10 to 12 weeks after receipt of order. In quantities of 1,000, the suggested resale pricing for the PT5500 series is $10.45 and the PT5520 series is $9.45.
