CAMARILLO, CALIF. - Power-One is billing its 240-watt quad switcher, the NET1-4130, as a revolutionary high-current, small-package solution for Internet and communications equipment applications.
The first in Power-One's new NET1 series, the supply features Efficient Dual Geometric Edge (Edge) technology, a patented pulse-width modulation technique that the company says increases the ability of next-generation systems to deliver output currents exceeding 100 amps in a small package-in this case, 7 x 4.5 x 1.35 inches. It thus fits the industry-standard 1U size typically used in high-speed datacom and telecom systems.
The NET1-4130 has maximum rated outputs (consistent with a total output of 240 W) of 1.8 V at 50 A, 3.3 V at 50 A, 5 V at 5 A and 12 V at 4 A (with 300-CFM forced-air cooling). It provides current share and remote sense on all four outputs to facilitate redundant and N + 1 applications.
The backbone of Edge technology is an interleaved, multiple-channel forward converter that uses transitional resonant-switching techniques, including a proprietary method of leading- and trailing-edge pulse-width modulation. This "soft transition" technique is coupled with self-driven, active synchronous rectifiers to achieve less heat and thus higher reliability as well as significant size reduction.
Typical efficiency is 80 percent at full-rated load, with line regulation of 0.2 percent and load regulation of 1 percent at 1.8 and 3.3 V. Ripple and noise is 1 percent or 50 mV peak to peak, and transient response time is 500 microseconds. The turn-on delay time required for initial output voltage stabilization is 2 seconds.
There is no minimum load requirement, and a new multifunctional output terminal handles high output currents. The output terminal allows connection to No. 8 ring lugs, 0.25-inch quick disconnects, cable connectors and pc-board-mounted connectors. The unit's active power factor correction (PFC) complies with the requirements of European line-harmonics standard EN61000-3-2. Overtemperature shutdown, overload and overvoltage protection are provided, along with power-fail and global-output-good signals.
The NET1-4130 meets UL60950 and CSA C22.2 No. 234/950 specs, and TUV licensed to EN60950. On-board EMI filtering provides compliance to FCC CFR title 47, part 15, and EN55022/CISPR 22, level B.
