Camarillo, Calif. - Vitesse Semiconductor Corp.'s VSC7166, a 10-Gbit/second very short-reach optical interconnect IC, integrates transmitter and receiver functions. The IC interfaces Sonet OC-192 framers with parallel optical modules, letting designers connect networking equipment in close proximity. The part converts 16-bit, 622-MHz Sonet-framed data to twelve 1.244-Gbit/s serial data streams for transmission of 10-Gbit/s data over 300 meters or less. Designers can lower costs by using VCSEL laser technology. Powered by 2.5- and 1.8-V supplies, the VSC7166 comes in a 256-pin, 27-mm BGA and sells for $70 in lots of 10,000.
