Billerica, Mass. - A new RS-232-compliant serial transceiver from Sipex Corp. offers a logic select feature that programs the device's TTL input/output signals for operation in mixed logic systems, thus eliminating the need for external level shifters, such as low-dropout linear regulators.
The voltage select feature on the SP3203E simplifies the communications interface between a handheld peripheral operating at a lower voltage and a host computer operating at a higher voltage.
The 3-V device, with three drivers and two receivers, is designed for use in next-generation cell phones, PDAs and other handheld, portable electronic devices. Electrostatic discharge protection on all I/Os includes plus/minus 15-kilovolt IEC1000-4-2 air gap discharge, plus/minus 8-kV contact discharge and plus/minus 15-kV human-body model.
The device provides a 250-kbit/second data transmission rate and a shutdown current of less than 1 microamp.
The SP3203E is available now in a 20-lead TSSOP. It's priced at $1.66 each in 10,000-piece quantities for 0 degrees C to 70 degrees C operation and at $1.75 for -40 degrees C to 85 degrees C.
