Newport Beach, Calif. - Mindspeed Technologies, the Conexant Systems unit focused on the Internet-infrastructure market, has developed a family of application-specific network processors that perform specific data-link controller functions, such as asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) shaping, policing and segmentation and reassembly (SAR).
The chips are aimed at cell- and packet-based applications including integrated access devices (IADs), voice gateways, routers, switches, digital subscriber loop access multiplexers (DSLAMs) and wireless basestations.
Founding members of the family are the M27603 IAD controller, which was introduced in May; the M27601/02 voice SAR controllers; the M27650 OC-12 ATM policer; and the M27651 OC-12 ATM shaper.
The M27601 voice SAR controller provides AAL1 and AAL2 services on a single chip for voice and compressed voice applications. The M27602 AAL2 voice SAR controller provides full AAL2 functionality at a DS3 rate (45 Mbits/second) for OEMs designing systems that implement AAL2.
The M27650 ATM policer performs ingress policing and operations-and-maintenance functions; the M27651 OC-12 ATM shaper performs egress traffic shaping and OAM functions. Both chips are based on the MXT4400 traffic stream processor and share an application-programming interface with the PortMaker cell traffic manager firmware.
When combined with a physical-layer device, such as Mindspeed's OptiPHY-F155 ATM/POS PHY (CX29704), the M27650/51 chips are said to deliver a complete ATM line-card solution.
Geoffrey Bosket, vice president of marketing for Mindspeed's broadband internetworking systems business unit, said the application-specific network processors combine the advantages of network processors with those of application-specific standard products.
"We know from experience how much time and talent it takes to develop custom networking applications, so we've taken our original concept of providing off-the-shelf applications a step further, by offering hardwired devices with the flexibility customers expect from a network pro-cessor," he said.
The IAD controller, AAL1/AAL2 voice SAR controller, AAL2 voice SAR controller, OC-12 ATM policer and OC-12 ATM shaper are sampling now and are slated to be in volume production in the third calendar quarter.
The devices are packaged in 474-pin ceramic ball grid arrays (CBGAs) and in 553-pin plastic ball grid arrays (PBGAs). Prices range from $90 to $125 in quantities of 1,000.
