Dallas, Tex. -Designed for digital video and audio-processing systems, MEN Micro Inc.'s PC MIP mezzanine card provides 400-Mbit/second performance across an IEEE 1394 connection.
The mezzanine card, known as the P14, offers the advantages of the small-form-factor PC MIP standard. As a result, it enables users to employ a 3U form factor, which is about half the height of the 6U form factor commonly used in the telecommunications industry.
"If you're offering any kind of application where space is a consideration, then 3U is much preferred," said Ernest Godsey, president of MEN Micro. "And because this a PC MIP card, it gives you the ability to tailor your I/O offering on a CPU card better than you could with a larger-form-factor mezzanine card."
The new mezzanine card supports the link-layer and physical-layer connections specified in the IEEE 1394 standard. It is compatible with the open-host-controller interface (OHCI), which defines an open I/O interface for the Windows operating system.
At 400 Mbits/s, the P14 is said to offer the highest speed currently available over a 1394 connection, but is also backward-compatible with slower 1394 devices that operate at 100 or 200 Mbits/s.
In addition, peripheral devices connected to the P14 may not need their own power supplies because the P14 supports 1394's integrated power distribution, which delivers power over the 1394 cable.
"The distinguishing feature of this is that it is one of the few PC MIP cards available for 1394," Godsey said. "If you need 1394, this is the way to get it on a 3U CompactPCI single-board computer."
Godsey said that PC MIP sites are important because they are now featured on many of the newest CompactPCI and VMEbus single-board computers in both 3U and 6U form factors. The PC MIP standard, jointly developed by MEN Mikro Electronik and SBS Modular I/O with support from Motorola, is electrically compatible with the PCI bus and offers small form factors.
As a Type II PC MIP module, the new P14 provides 1394 I/O signals via a shielded six-pin Molex receptacle connector on the PC MIP front panel. Protocol stacks for the OHCI controller are available on the commercial market.
