Westerville, Ohio - Addressing efficient, higher-density solutions for CompactPCI applications, Tracewell Power's TTX Series of dc/dc power supplies was designed from the ground up to meet thermal considerations first. It operates at full-rated power from -20 degrees C to 60 degrees C (assuming 400-LFM airflow), and is billed as the first 400-watt, 3U-size, one-slot (4HP) supply for CompactPCI.
These supplies provide 5 volts at 35 amps, 3.3 V at 45 A, 12 V at 5 A and -12 V at 1.5 A from a nominal -48-volt input. A 700-W, 6U-size, one-slot supply will also be available, the company said, providing 5 V at 60 A, 3.3 V at 90 A, 12 V at 7.5 A and -12 V at 1.5 A from a nominal -48-V input.
"None of the traditional supplies we've seen maintain output over the full range of specified operating temperatures because the thermal needs hadn't been met," said Matt Tracewell, executive vice president at Tracewell Power.
The patent-pending TTX topology is described as an isolated, fixed 500-kHz design that uses what the company calls a dual soft-switching bridge architecture with integrated planar magnetics.
The topology diverges totally from that of the traditional dc/dc converter, and features a configurable control unit that provides a number of I2C options. Its I2C interface adds to controllability by communicating the results of ongoing output-voltage and current measurements to a main (external) system CPU overlooking all boards in a system.
The main CPU can thus verify the supply's voltage percentages and load balancing, the company said, and also provide look-ahead assessment for early warnings of faulty connectors and other problems before they become critical.
Line and load regulation is plus/minus 1 percent over the input range of -36 to -72 V, with 0 to 100 percent load change and no minimum load. Efficiency is specified at 87 percent, and reliability is said to be high, in part because the collection of switching FETs-all in direct contact with an integrated, side-mounted heat sink-are run at just 30 to 40 percent of their maximum rating.
Pricing for the TTX 3U 400-W supply starts at $500 in single quantities. It will be available in January. The 700-W, 6U TTX supplies will be available in late January.
