Hyannis, Mass. - Inova Computers' new Pentium 4-based, flexible single-board computer incorporates communications capabilities, high-performance graphics and myriad I/O facilities, enabling it to tackle industrial computing jobs that previously required multiple computers.
Known as the P4 Samurai, the 3U CompactPCI board features a newly developed universal PCI-to-PCI bridge chip and an adaptive I/O routing scheme. It is said to offer high raw system performance using the Pentium 4's "Quad Pumped Bus" technology, enabling it to transfer four 64-bit data packs over its front-side bus rather than the one or two packets of previous CPU generations. As a result, the board is able to fully exploit the capabilities of the latest double-data-rate (DDR)-RAM-266 memories, which command bandwidths of up to 2.16 Gbytes/second.
The P4 Samurai also provides a full memory complement. The Pentium 4 processor incorporates 512 kbytes of on-die L2 cache and the P4 Samurai board accommodates up to 512 Mbytes of soldered DDR-RAM-266, providing a basis for Linux, Solaris and Windows operating systems. Additionally, an optional DDR SO-DIMM memory extension enables problem-free expansion of working memory up to a full Gbyte. A Compact Flash socket is also integrated onto the board for adding solid-state flash memory cards or to take advantage of IBM's Microdrive hard-disk technology.
On the peripheral and I/O front, the P4 Samurai delivers a full slate of interfaces and ports, including ATA 100, USB 1.1/2.0, dual 10-/100-Mbit/s Ethernet and VGA graphics. The board's USB controller automatically recognizes the transfer rate of attached devices and adjusts accordingly.
The single-board computer's Ethernet and USB signals are routed to both the front panel and the CompactPCI- J2 connector. An intelligent I/O routing facility on the board automatically determines the desired route at boot-up, switching corresponding signals accordingly.
The P4 Samurai, available with four processors ranging from 1.2 to 2 GHz, has full hot-swap capability as defined in the latest CompactPCI standard. Pricing starts at less than $2,000 each in OEM quantities, with delivery of six to eight weeks.
