Dallas - Texas Instruments Inc. has launched two 32-bit, mixed-signal digital signal processors with performance of 150 million instructions per second plus a single-cycle, 32 x 32-bit media-access controller capability. The TMS320F2810 and TMS320F2812 also boast up to a quarter megabyte of on-chip flash memory and an on-chip 12-bit analog-to-digital converter.
"Many developers require DSP performance, flash memory and precision analog in their applications, but are challenged to minimize the number of devices in their designs, thereby compromising performance for integration," said Todd Solak, TI's worldwide C2000 DSP marketing manager. "These DSPs offer a single-chip solution."
The TMS320F2810 and TMS320F2812 are based on TI's 32-bit TMS320C28x DSP core, which is optimized for execution of C and C++ applications, and are code-compatible with the TMS320C24xx family of DSPs. The devices are also supported by a virtual floating-point math library.
The processors target a range of applications-from traditional motor control to optical networking.
The TMS320F2810 integrates 128 kwords of flash memory for simple reprogramming during development and in-field software updates, while the TMS320F2812 integrates 64 kwords. Optimized event managers include pulse-width modulation generators, programmable general-purpose timers and glueless capture encoder interfaces. A 12-bit, 16.7-Msample/s A/D converter with dual sample-and-hold provides critical support in tight control loops, TI said, and five on-chip standard communication ports offer simple interfaces to hosts, test equipment, displays and other components.
Solak said the devices incorporate 32-bit math capabilities and are supported by a math library. "Developers port floating-point algorithms to a fixed-point processor in a matter of minutes-much faster than converting math algorithms in traditional 16-bit devices," Solak said, adding that the devices deliver the math code efficiency of DSPs and the ease and system code efficiency of general-purpose processors.
The devices are supported by TI's ExpressDSP software and development tools and will be supported by DSP/BIOS that offers instrumented kernel services optimized for fast execution speed.
