Sunnyvale, Calif. - Maxim Integrated Products' 26-volt, step-up dc/dc converter, the MAX1561, can power as many as six white LEDs. Efficiency is as high as 84 percent and brightness is controlled by an analog or digital pulse-width-modulation (PWM) input without the need for additional components.
Packaged in an eight-pin, 3 x 3-mm QFN, the unit includes a 30-V MOSFET switch that supports two to six LEDs in series or up to 12 in multiple chains. The device provides a constant 1-MHz PWM switching frequency, and its low-profile inductor and capacitor are said to ease filtering and data synchronization and reduce noise interference.
The device's 15-millivolt peak-to-peak input ripple suits it for noise-sensitive applications. Internal soft-start reduces inrush current, and 0.3-microamp shutdown current prolongs battery life. The MAX-1561 is priced from $1.30 in 1,000-piece quantities.
