Menlo Park, Calif. - The ROV series of metal-oxide varistors from Raychem Circuit Protection is available in diameters of 5 to 20 mm and rated from 18 to 1,800 volts. High current-handling and energy absorption capability, fast response and low cost suit the ROV devices for use in line voltage applications that include security systems, power supplies and surge strips, said the company, which is a unit of Tyco Electronics.
Pairing the varistor with Raychem's PolySwitch LVR overcurrent-protection device is said to help provide a completely resettable circuit protection solution for power supplies, surge strips and control board transformers. In addition, ROV and PolySwitch devices can be combined to protect electric motors.
The varistors are available in radial-leaded configurations, and can be supplied in tape-and-reel packaging for compatibility with high-volume assembly. They are priced at 3 to 30 cents each, depending on diameter and voltage rating, in quantities of 100,000 per year. Samples are available now.
