Smyrna, Ga. - Designed to replace aluminum electrolytic and tantalum capacitors, Murata Electronics North America Inc.'s new line of miniaturized multilayer ceramic chip capacitors offers an increased capacitance range up to 100 microfarads with voltage values of 6.3 volts. The devices can be used in a variety of applications including mobile communications equipment, digital audiovisual equipment and personal computers.
Historically, 1 microfarad and above has always been the realm of aluminum and tantalum capacitors, and expanding the ceramic product line to target those applications was another way to grow our business, said Geoff Brock, product manager for capacitors for Murata Electronics.
Murata has achieved the higher capacitance values through the use of ultrathin dielectric layers down to 2 microns.
The capacitors are available in capacitance values of 0.1, 1, 4.7, 22, 47 and 100 microfarads, all at 6.3 V. In addition, Murata is also offering 2.2-, 10- and 22-microfarads devices, all at 10 V. Packages available include 1210, 1206, 0805, 0603, 0402 and 0201 case sizes, depending on capacitance and voltage ratings.
A primary advantage of Murata's ceramic capacitors is their lower equivalent series resistance, down in the milliohm range or lower, whereas the ESR of tantalum capacitors can be an order of magnitude greater, Brock said. Plus, they have a better self-heating characteristic so there is less loss in the circuit, and they don't have polarity issues like a tantalum capacitor does, he said.
Tantalum capacitors also tend to lose capacitance at higher frequencies, whereas ceramic capacitors will maintain the capacitance value, Brock said. In many cases that allows Murata, for example, to replace a 10-microfarads tantalum with a 4.7-microfarads ceramic capacitor, which gives the end customer both a cost and size reduction, he said. Samples are available now. Pricing for the capacitors ranges from 10 cents to 70 cents, depending on capacitance and voltage values. Delivery is from stock to eight weeks.
