Chandler, Ariz. - Microchip Technology's new MCP7384x charge-management controller family includes four devices with differing feature sets to support most single-cell and dual-cell lithium-ion and lithium-polymer battery charging applications. They're suited to wireless handsets, PDAs, digital cameras, MP3 players, and self-charging battery packs. The series combine high-accuracy, constant-voltage/constant-current regulation, cell preconditioning, cell-temperature monitoring, advanced safety timers, automatic charge termination, and charge status indication all in an MSOP package.
Cell preconditioning supports deeply depleted batteries.
Cell-temperature monitoring (available in the MCP73841/2) continuously measures the cell temperature and disables charging when the temperature is outside the recommended temperature window. Safety timers allow for time-based charge termination, which assures safety in the case of defective battery cells. These devices offer designers the flexibility to program the charge current and utilize an external field effect transistor (FET), making them ideal for high capacity battery packs that require fast charging time. These chargers are rated for operation over -40 to +85 C.
The MCP73841/2/3/4 automatically power down when the input source is removed, minimizing the battery drain. They also begin a new charge cycle when the battery voltage falls below the recharge threshold, thereby eliminating frequent trickle charge periods that are detrimental to battery life. The devices will work from a loosely regulated 12 volts as provided by a wall adapter, thus reducing total system cost. The MCP7384x, voltage regulated to ± 0.5 percent, are available in 4.1, 4.2, 8.2, and 8.4 preset voltage options to accommodate single- and dual-cell battery packs with coke or graphite anodes. These chargers are compatible with many of Microchip's product lines including the PowerSmart product portfolio, DC/DC converters and line regulators, and PICmicro microcontrollers with nanoWatt Technology for power management applications.
