Elpida Memory, Inc., Japan's leading global supplier of Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM), today announced the formation of its Digital Consumer Division. The new Division will focus on the development of a Consumer DRAM product line aimed at supporting low-voltage and advanced packaging options for consumer electronics applications.
Elpida's first product release under its Digital Consumer Division is a 128 Megabit SDRAM device newly re-designed for consumer products such as DVD players/recorders, video servers and printers. Consumer electronics is a growing market that is beginning to take advantage of DRAM to realize greater functionality and performance. This market requires compact packaged devices with low power consumption making DRAM a viable technology for consumer applications that demand reduced board space and voltage to achieve maximum performance.
"Elpida's Digital Consumer Division was established to introduce product lines that fit the needs of consumer electronics applications," said Akira Endo, division manager of the Digital Consumer Division for Elpida Memory. "Elpida's new 128 Megabit SDRAM device provides the space and power consumption requirements necessary for optimized performance in consumer products. We are currently developing more Consumer DRAM products to meet the needs of consumer electronics OEMs."
128 Megabit SDRAM Features
The new devices (Part numbers: EDS1216AAxx, EDS1216CAxx) are organized as 8M words x 16-bits, and they offer either 3.3 V or 2.5 V operation, thus reducing power consumption up to 40%. The devices utilize Elpida's proven 0.11 micron processing, and they operate at 133 MHz (PC133). Elpida's devices are available as a "bare die" solution suitable for use in the customer's own System-in-Package (SiP) and/or Multi-Chip Package (MCP) design implementations.
The devices also support two packaging options"a 54-ball FBGA package (8mm x 8mm) for maximum reduction in board space, and a JEDEC-standard 54-pin TSOP package for easy replacement of legacy components. All three device options can be supported by one chip.
