A new graphics controller card from board maker MEN Micro (Dallas, Texas) can drive two independent digital displays, alternatively with identical or with different screen displays. It features a 235-MHz 24-bit RAMDAC, and is capable of driving two separate panels or a single high-resolution UXGA panel. Topping it off, the double-wide PC-MIP mezzanine card packs 16 Mbytes of graphics RAM.
The PC-MIP Standard
What's this PC-MIP stuff, anyhow? Well, the PC-MIP spec was developed jointly by MEN Mikro Elektronik in Europe, and several other prominent electronics companies. The PC-MIP specification is also an accepted ANSI standard.
It combines the best of three worlds: first, it features the industrial front connection of the M-Modules standard; second, it has the flexible and small form-factor of so-called Industry Packs; and third, the PC-MIP specification is electrically compatible with the PCI bus.
As many as six PC-MIP modules can also be placed on a standard 6U carrier card, while three PC-MIP modules will fit on a single 3U carrier.
"This PC-MIP card gives system designers who need high-end graphics a lot of flexibility," says Ernest Godsey, president of MEN Micro. "With this one controller card, a system can support multiple screens with the same content replicated on each screen, or multiple screens with one image or display content spread across two screens."
MEN's new PC-MIP module, designated the P17, is capable of screen resolution of up to 1600 x 1200-pixels. It has a DVI-I (Digital Video Interface-Integrated) connector on its front panel to accommodate a variety of monitor types, including LCD/TFT, CRT VGA monitors, and even TVs.

The P17's two LVDS (low voltage differential signaling) channels can be used to drive two separate display panels or a single high-resolution UXGA panel. The two LVDS channels are also routed to an on-board connector on the P17 and a rear I/O connector on the P17's carrier card. In addition, the P17 has an S-Video (Super-Video channel for both input and output.
Price and Availability
The P17 is available now, with pricing starting at less than $600 for single units.
