Packing an Intel Pentium M CPU, Card Bus, CompactFlash, and an optional Gigabit Ethernet (Gbe) interface, Arista Corp.'s (Fremont, Calif.) latest Model EBC-8550 debuts as a low-power single-board computer (SBC) designed for single-voltage battery-operated applications.
Supporting all popular operating systems, including Windows XP and Windows 2000, Arista's latest board also has a Socket 479 Intel Pentium M microprocessor with a 400-MHz system bus, and Intel's popular 855GM chipset. With a built-in Intel Extreme Graphic controller, the product also supports DVI and dual LVDS channels for LCDs. It also has NTSC and PAL video outputs.
Arista hasn't overlooked networking with this product, either. The EBC-8550 can be fitted with an optional Intel 82540EM 1000/100/10 Ethernet controller chip for that purpose, and an 82562E2/EX 100/10 Mbit/s Ethernet interface.
On the Card Bus front, the SBC interface complies with the PCMCIA's v.2.10 specs, as well as JEIDA's v.4.1 specs for plug-in cards. The EBC-8550 supports Type I, Type II, and Type III PCMCIA memory cards, as well as PC Card I/O and ATA types.
There's lot of I/O aboard, too. Standard I/O features include three RS-232 and one RS-232/422/485 serial ports, and a bi-directional parallel port supporting SSP, ECP, and EEP modes.
Significantly, Arista has included a number of industrial-oriented features on its EBC-8550---except for temperature (more on this in a moment). These features include a watchdog timer that supports software-programmable timeout intervals and generation of system reset. The board also packs an SSD interface via a 50-pin CompactFlash socket. Lastly, an onboard Winbond W83627HF device monitors temperature, fan speed, and operating voltage.

The EBC-8550 measures 8 x 5.57-in. (203-mm X 146-mm) and requires a single 12-V to 25-V source. Its operating temperature range is a bit less than the recommended commercial range however. The EBC-8550 is rated for operation over 0°C to 60°C (the commercial span is 0°C to 70°C).
