Board maker ACCES I/O Products, Inc. (San Diego, Calif.) announces additions to its ever-expanding line of PC/104-compatible boards. These industrial-oriented products look quite flexible, too, supporting both single-ended and differential signaling.
The company's FPGA-based Model 104-COM-8SM and Model 104-COM-4SM are eight- and four-port, asynchronous serial communications boards, respectively. They're priced at about $250 and $200 a pop, also respectively.
Both products support field-selectable RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485 protocols, with ports accessed via two 40-pin IDC (insulation displacement connector) right-angle header connectors.
Both boards also include an Auto-RTS feature for half-duplex RS-485 communications. Both permit connection of multiple serial devices"as sometimes needed in applications such as point-of-sale, gaming systems, machine monitoring and control, military, and high-density networking.
Both products also pack 16780 UART chips, and include 64-byte transmit/receive FIFO buffers to protect against lost data in multi-tasking systems---while maintaining 100% compatibility with all operating system COM port drivers. On-board crystal-controlled oscillators support baud rates up to 921.6-kbit/s.
Both boards are also available in either standard temperature or extended temp versions (the latter is intended for outdoor or industrial applications). Standard range spans 0°C to +70°C; the optional extended temp range spans -40°C to +80°C.

Other features that make these boards useful for harsh environment operation include good humidity specs (5% to 95% RH, non-condensing), low power (+5-V DC at 80-mA, typical, or 400-mW of dissipation), and no dual power sources needed.
In addition, both products have programmable individual non-volatile COM base addresses with shared IRQs. Fixed bias and jumper-selectable terminations are also provided on each transmit/receive channel
DOS, Windows, And The Penguin
The 104-COM-8SM and -4SM are supported by virtually all operating systems, including DOS (remember that?), Linux, and Windows. For the latter, ACCES I/O supports Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP.
The package includes sample programs and source code in C and Pascal for DOS, and C, Delphi, C++ Builder, and Visual C++ for Windows. Also included is a graphical option configuration program in Windows, and a Windows terminal program simplifies verification of proper operation.
Linux support includes installation files and basic samples for register?level programming in C.
ACCES I/O Products hardware comes with a 30-day return policy and a three-year warranty. For further information, visit the company's Web site.
