Need a powerful single-board computer with virtually every PC hook and bell-and-whistle imaginable? Need one that will work in harsh industrial applications? If so, take a looksee at Arista Corp.'s(Fremont, Calif.) newest ware, its Model ATX-6710 Mini-ITX mainboard.
Based on an Intel 82855GM and 82801DB chipset, this diminutive board-level product is operable from a single DC power source of 12-V or 19-V, and is optimized to support its Pentium M running at 1.7-GHz with a 400-MHz front-side bus. It also includes high-speed DDR memory, and an integrated graphics controller using Intel Extreme Graphics.
The board's integrated display controller also comes with up to 64-Mbytes of dynamic video memory, and single- or dual-channel LVDS (low voltage differential signaling) to support panels up to UXGA resolution. The board uses a Chrontel CH7017A LVDS device to support up to 1600 x 1200-pixel resolution in 16 million colors, supporting dual 24-bit channel LVDS TFT (thin film transistor) LCDs.
To meet the requirements of different display interfaces, the ATX-6710 provides an optional Mini-AGP slot for a Mini-AGP add-on card. Additionally, the ATX-6710 is equipped with a PCMCIA and CompactFlash interface for communications and memory cards.
Gbytes Of Flash Possible
The board also offers flash capacity up to 1-Gbyte (and beyond if need be), and can let you implement the popular DiskOnModule flash "disk." It's IDE-based, bootable, and driver free. The DiskOnModule flash disk PIO
is Mode 4, with 16.6 Mbit/s data transfer rates.
Networking is also included. For that purpose, the ATX-6710 comes with an on-board Intel 82540EM chip to support Gbit-speed Ethernet. Moreover, the aforementioned 855GM/GME chip, with the intel Extreme Graphics 2 support, packs a 266-MHz VGA core and a 256-bit 3D engine. It will work with Intel Dynamic Video Memory, supporting up to 64-Mbytes of shared system memory. Here's what this well-endowed board looks like:
The ATX-6710 also has two COM ports, one parallel port, six 2.0 USB (Universal Serial Bus) ports, one UltraATA 100 EIDE, and an IrDA (infra-red) interface.
One 32-bit PCI slot supports a two bus master PCI, via riser and Mini-PCI slots for system expansion. That configuration can hold all types of Mini-PCI modules, used for feature extensions such as Centrino-like wireless LAN, DES encryption, a modem, or a capture card.
A Flexible Watchdog Timer
Arista also includes some unique industrial features that aren't typically found on conventional motherboards. One key feature is a watchdog timer that generates a NMI (non-maskable interrupt), or a system reset (with one to 255 seconds/minute of time-out value).
The ATX-6710 measures 6.8 x 6.8-in (170-mm by 170-mm), with a standard Mini-ITX form factor. Operating temperature range is from 0°C to 60°C.
Price and Availability
Arisat says that its ATX-6710 is available for delivery with pricing starting at about $320, with volume OEM discounts available, and that includes a 2-year warranty and 5-year availability guarantee.
